Your Questions, Answered

  • For many decades, reading education in the US and Canada has been based on ineffective methods such as Whole Language, Balanced Literacy and Three cueing. However, in the past several years some States and Provinces have passed laws and regulations requiring the use of evidence-based practices to teach reading.

This is very encouraging. However, in some cases, to be effective it may be necessary to overcome the obstacles of reluctant school boards, previously ineffective curricula, lack of student assessment, and inadequate teacher training, support, and resources.

We encourage parents to support the many teachers who support the use of evidence-based practices.

The following are links to four major studies on the teaching of reading.

  • The average effect size of 1:1 tutoring is 0.41 (moderate impact), whereas for small groups it is 0.24 (small impact).

One-to-one tutoring is superior because the learner receives more time and higher quality (undivided) attention.

    Exerpts from research reports:

    • Reviews have concluded that one-to-one tutoring is the most effective intervention known to improve the reading achievement of struggling students in elementary school (ES = 0.41), but small group tutoring (led by teachers or paraprofessionals) can also improve student literacy (ES = 0.24) (see Neitzel et al., 2020). • Outcomes were positive for one-to-one tutoring and were positive but not as large for one-to-small group tutoring. BEE, page 2, ILA

    • Small-group, phonetic tutorials can be effective, but are not as effective as one-to-one phonetically focused tutoring. ERR‍, page 1

    • One-on-one virtual early literacy tutoring was nearly twice as effective as two-on-one tutoring for improving student learning. MDPI

  • We specialize in providing tutoring in reading only, for new readers and those who are struggling to read, including those with specific learning differences.

Our sessions are one-to-one personalized tutoring and one hour in length.

We offer in-person tutoring in the Halifax area of Nova Scotia, Canada.

We offer online tutoring sessions anywhere in Canada and the USA.

All of our sessions are very positive, supportive, and interactive, which helps them get results. We follow evidence-based principles and practices that make the learning both fun and effective.

  • Studies say that vulnerable learners are the most at risk of summer learning loss, and literacy skills suffer the most for those learners.

In our experience, having regular tutoring sessions for at least part of the summer will not only prevent summer learning loss but may also significantly raise the learner’s reading level.

  • Getting started is simple. Reach out through our contact form, and we’ll walk you through the next steps and answer any questions along the way.

  • It’s not just what we do—it’s how we do it that sets us apart.

We offer only one-to-one tutoring so your child has our exclusive time and attention, and receives the maximum benefit from the time available.

This approach allows us to move at the ideal pace for your child, to customize the session to your child’s personality and needs, and to ensure your child is always paying close attention.

Consequentially, your child will progress more quickly.

Our sessions are highly interactive and fun. Our learners are not expected to just listen to the tutor or be entertained by them. Instead, our learners participate in hands-on, multisensory activities that keep them focused, engaged, and learning with every step.

In our experience, as a learner become a more successful reader, they also become more confident and committed.

And, because confident reading is so fundamental to a child, it supports their success in all other school subjects and positively impacts all aspects of their life.
